The fishing experiences I like the best are the ones where you are out in the wilderness where no one else are, not to the point that if you were to be attacked by a bear, no one would be there to help for miles, but still in the wilderness. Find a big creek somewhere, or a shallow river, and just soak some nightcrawlers. You never know what you’re gonna catch, it could be a bass, crappie, catfish, sucker, carp, anything. Those are the fun times. The simplest of gear, and the simpliest of bait, can make the best of fishing trips.
That is just my definition of an “extremely fun fishing trip”.

It kind of depends on where you live and how much you want to spend on the trip. Anyway, some really fun trips are out of San Diego on a tuna boat. Assuming the tuna/dorado/yellowtail are around, These are some of the best trips out there. The season runs from June to october( sometimes November), but every year it varies. Also, depending on which time you go, you may catch different fish. If you go in between June and August, Albacore, Bluefin, and yellow tail are the main targets. For the rest of the season, Albacore and bluefin get less in numbers and yellowfin tuna, dorado, and skipjack get in bigger numbers. Marlin are also around, but there not targeted by tuna boats and are often released. Yellow tail are around most of the season. Keep in mind that this is just a general idea of what fishing will be, as each year is different. Some years some fish will show and other won’t.
For example, a few years ago there was a tuna season where albacore and bluefin were caught in smaller than normal numbers In-between June and August. However, once August started, it ended up to be one of the best years for yellow tail and dorado( yellow tail and dorado are not tuna, but are targeted with the tuna and are highly sought after). This was the only season where I lost count of the fish I caught. Also, last year there was three different phases for tuna, Albacore and bluefin first, then just bluefin for a while, then wide open yellowfin tuna action followed after that with yellow tail and dorado in the mix. I got my limit of yellow fin when I went. Because the season varies very widely, you will want to check the fish counts before you go. I will provide links to the big three tuna fishing landings.
As for the price for these trips, it ranges from 185$ for a overnight trip to 1000 dollars plus for bigger 4-6 day trips. If I were you, I would do at least a 1.5 day trip because fishing on overnight boats can often miss the fish because they can not stay out that long( though most years they do get some good fishing). 2-3 days would be even better, but it all depends on what you can afford. 1.5-3 day trips run in between 300$ -750 dollars a person and most trips over 2 days will include meals and drinks( all boats price include bunks and bait). On 1.5 day trips it varies and overnight boats almost never include meals and drinks. If you need tackle, you can rent it at the landings before you leave.Keep in mind that the price of the trip will not include fish cleaning and tip; and since some boats will not include meals( if you do the smaller trips, cheaper tips), the 185$ dollar price for a trip maybe 100$ more including these things. However, if you do a 2 day trip, it should include meals and drinks and you will only need to pay tip, fishing cleaning, jackpot( only about ten dollars and if you get the biggest fish, you get the jackpot, which can range in between 100-500 dollars depending on the number of people), and maybe a fuel surcharge.
Anyway, these trips are very fun and I do them every year and have always caught a fish. Never have I come away empty handed.
Hope this helps!!
P.S. If you want to do something bigger, these landings offer 10-21 day trips down to Baja California and beyond and you will have a chance of catching a yellow fin tuna of 200 pounds or more( the fish on the trips I just described average 10-50 pounds with fish over 100 pounds rare). Wahoo are also caught along with other fish.
